Since LSM TyreGuard® rollout 2017 delivers strong fire mitigation outcomes across TfNSW bus fleet

A new LSM Technologies discussion paper (see link below) has highlighted the long - term safety impact of Transport for NSW’s Tyre Monitoring System mandate, pointing to a sustained reduction in wheel- end, brake and tyre fire incidents across the contracted bus fleet.

The paper reviews Office of Transport Safety Investigations (OTSI) reporting over the past near decade and traces the policy pathway that led to the 2017 TfNSW mandate under Specification BC17/18562. Before the intervention, wheel wells and braking systems were repeatedly identified as major origins of bus fires. In some years, wheel / brake / tyre - related incidents accounted for up to 40- 45 per cent of bus fire events in NSW.

Following the (BIC) Bus Industry Confederation’s 2014 Fire Mitigation Advisory, TfNSW moved to require Tyre Pressure and Temperature Monitoring (TMSystems) to provide earlier warning of abnormal wheel - end conditions. LSM began proving and deployment in 2017 and estimates that more than 4,000 buses in NSW are now fitted with LSM TyreGuard® TMSystems.

According to LSM paper’s analysis of OTSI- reported data, the safety outcomes have been significant. Wheel / brake / tyre fires fell from 17 in 2015 and 8 in 2016 to just 1 in 2018, before reaching zero from 2019 onward.

Over the same period, thermal detections increased sharply. The paper says this is not a sign of worsening risk, but evidence that overheating events are being detected and managed before ignition can occur.

For LSM, the findings reinforce the importance of proactive monitoring, driver response and structured incident reporting in preserving these gains.

As bus safety standards continue to evolve, the paper positions LSM TyreGuard® TMSystems as a proven preventative technology helping to support safer bus fleet operations.
